Great Shelling on Sanibel Island !

The past month has been a great time to collect the many varieties of shells that wash up on Sanibel Island.  Sanibel is known as one of the top 10 best shelling locations in the world.  The reason there are so many shells lining the beaches is the shape of the island as well as the currents that surround it.  Sanibel and Captiva island jut out from the coast of Fort Myers beach in a east west position.  Most barrier islands hug the coast in a north south position.  Because of Sanibels unique position it becomes a basket for shells.

While the weather during the day for the past month has been a sunny mid 70's at night the temperature has dropped to the 50's-60's.  We even had a couple nights in the 40's.  This cold night weather causes the shells to lose grip of the bottom of the sea floor.  Soon they are found washed up on the sandy white beaches like little treasures just waiting to be found.

Below is a picture of  the beautiful shells we have found recently.
