Sanibel School No. 1 in state

The Sanibel School is the best place to get an elementary/middle school education in the state, according to Florida’s first-ever school rankings released Monday.

The state Department of Education posted its best-to-worst ranking of Florida’s 3,078 public schools, and the Sanibel Island school was the only Lee and Collier County institution to get a top-10 ranking. Sanibel was the top-ranked combination school for elementary and middle school students. The state ranked the schools based on the number of school grade points they received for the 2010-11 school year as part of the state’s school grading formula.

For elementary, middle and combination schools, points are earned based solely on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, with points given for the percentages of students scoring at grade level or better on the FCAT or making learning gains. For high schools, FCAT points are added into scores on non-FCAT components, such as graduation rates and participating in advanced classes.

The state is touting the new rankings as an easy-to-read list that lets parents, taxpayers and others know how well their school or district is performing. Last week, the state released a similar ranking for school districts: Lee placed 22nd of the 67 school districts; Collier 33rd.

Thodos Dance Chicago At Big Arts

Thodos Dance Chicago will perform at BIG ARTS Schein Performance Hall on Friday, February 3 at 7:30 p.m. General admission seats are $42, loge seats are $47 and children’s tickets are $15.

A reviewer for the Chicago Sun-Times wrote, “Thodos Dance Chicago has ascended to a whole new level of excellence.” They will perform their Fosse Trilogy at BIG ARTS, as well as other pieces from their repertoire. Fosse Trilogy is an adaptation of works originally created by Bob Fosse in the early 1960s for television (a Bob Hope special and The Ed Sullivan Show). Tony Award-winning choreographer and Fosse muse Ann Reinking staged this piece – with its romantic, Latin- based music – for live performances and created the transition choreography.

TDC has performed in more than 50 venues in the U.S. and participated in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the International Istanbul Dance Festival, the Ankara Music and Dance Festival, and the Busan International Dance Festival in Korea.
